A delegation from Amnesty International meets President Yoweri Museveni today to discuss the death penalty.
The delegation led by its Secretary General Irene Khana arrived in Uganda last Sunday. Part of the delegation met officials of the Uganda Citizen's Rescue, a local NGO pushing for the abolition of the death penalty.
UCR co-ordinator, Mr Godfrey Ssebuwufu, told The Monitor on Monday that they presented a preliminary report to Amnesty on various prisoners on death row at Luzira.
Sharma Kooky's case was also put before Amnesty.
UCR alleges that police doctored the evidence against Kooky.
"We asked the AI team to request Museveni to institute an inquiry particularly in this [Kooky] case," he said.
High Court Judge Moses Mukiibi on January 17, 2000 convicted and sentenced Kooky to death for killing his wife Renu Joshi.
His co-accused and in-law Davinder Kumar was acquitted by the Supreme Court in April last year.
