Warren H.

To grasp Warren H. is as a human being, a bit of his story is required.

Warren’s background and experiences, and ultimately his social upbringing and lifestyle can only be understood in the context of the culture and community in which he was raised.

Warren as an African American, born ad raised in ethnically segregated poverty-stricken communities in the Los Angeles area. He grew up in Carson/Long Beach/California, in a single parent home, as the oldest of four siblings. He became overwhelmed by the circumstances of his mother’s lifestyle, including her alcoholism, the need to work, her family problems and her disastrous relationships with men. She was emotionally unavailable and her children were unable to depend on her for emotional support. Much of the responsibilities for Warren and his younger siblings was delegated to the children themselves. Abandoned by his biological father, Warren’s mother’s violent and abusive live-in boyfriend became step-father.

Warren recalls being terrified by what witnessed, and the tried to intervene, he would become the victim of abuse himself. Scared and vulnerable, he began leaving and search the streets for a male role model to replace the father figure he never had in his life, but to no avail. Thirteen years old and in the street, he eventually became involved of life of crime, sex and drugs.

Warren and his siblings loved their mother, and tried to support her in areas where home life had devastated them. Sadly, but not surprisingly, because of a few bad choices, Warren and on of his younger brothers were convicted and sentenced to San Quentin State’s Prison’s Death Row.

Incarcerated since the age of twenty-two, Warren lives in an isolated cell on Death Row. He has existed alone with virtually no outside social contact beyond an occasional once-a-year holiday visit from his mother.

Mail call comes and goes, day after day, says Warren, as he stands by his cell door hoping to receive a letter from someone. „I want so much to share my faith with others“, says Warren. „Since my imprisonment, I have struggled alone with feelings of hopelessness and despair and loss of self-esteem, struggling to love myself. I am a faith believer, striving to learn about God, through a soul search transformation in religion and spiritual science studies. There’s not very much I can do do confined in a condemned cell.

I pray daily to meet a friend, someone who will not pass judgement on my life because of a few bad choices and human errors I made in my ignorance. Life, I am learning, is about to growth. Though my life is far from ideal, I’m not afraid to admit that I need help. I need good people in my life. My heart is open in all sincerity. It would be a blessing to hear from you.“
